David A's Story

Who Knows Where The Time Goes? I guess I'll have to ask Judy Collins who sang that beautiful song. I keep praying I can always remember what I did yesterday - let alone 40 years ago. The last time I looked it up, I graduated from East High School in 1967, did a few odd jobs, then worked full-time at CF&I Steel in the Wire Mill. Fortuneatly, I was on the Selctive Service's mailing list who sent me my draft qualification of 1-A. Solution - I joined the U.S. Air Force. This was my ticket out of Pueblo! They said I had the aptitude to become a jet engine mechanic. Whew! Relief! I, at least knew, I wouldn't be turning pancakes and serving SOS on the chow line for four years. In June 1968, I got my all-expenses paid trip to basic training in San Antonio, TX. From there,I did become a jet engine mehanic on F-4 C, D, and E fighter jets in California and Thailand. After the Air Force, I returned to my old job at the CF&I for a while. And then, I moved to Denver. Like most young men, I knew the military had changed me for the better. My goal was to get a college degree. In Denver, I met my ex-wife Gail.(I haven't seen or talked to her in 30 years.)Anyway, she moved from Denver to Greeley to enroll in the University of Northern Colorado's Nursing School. This caused my life in Denver to be short-lived because I also moved to Greeley with her. We were married in 1975 and divorced in 1979. I liked Greeley very much. Everyday, I could smell the feedlots floating in the air. The old farmers told me to think of it as "the smell of money." Just like the smoke from the CF&I smokestacks were "the sign of prosperity." "Back to school," I said. With the help of the G.I. Bill, I enrolled in school full-time at Aims Community College. It was a great experience. My claim ...Expand for more
to fame here was in becoming the Editor of the student newpaper - the Aims College World, and an A.A.Sc. degee. The paper won several awards during my watch. I, also, played many many rounds of golf at Highland Hills G.C. All of my Aims credits were transferable to Prairie Tech (now CSU at Pueblo). So, I moved to Pueblo and lived in my mother's basement while attending school. Gail, my ex-wife, stayed in Greeley until she finished nursing school. Yes, we commuted back and forth. I, finally, graduated with a B.Sc. in Mass Communications/Journalism. However, I never worked in Journalism, and in a round about way, I ended up back in Greeley wanting the independence of my own business. Enter - the financial planning business in 1979. I answered a recruiting ad in the Greeley Tribune. I have been in it ever since. The majority of my business and work ended up being in Denver. In 1982, I moved to Denver and have been here ever since then. Today, my health, due to diabetes, has been damaged. My eyesight is about 70-80 percent which takes the fun out of golf. However, I plan to try playing again. Photography has been a passion of mine for the last 40 years which has been on hold. My favorite all-time activity has been competetive tournament bowling - especially in Las Vegas. Bowl for the mega-bucks. But, my legs ain't so great and I've lost about 40 pins in average. The sharks would eat me alive. Memories of East HS: Our golf team was the worst golf team in the state but we had the most fun - ask Mike Webster. Mr. Spence. Friday night dances. Friday night football games. Soap Opera romances. Metals shop with Mr. Potestio - that was an adventure. Fisticuffs - fun to watch. The End. See You At The Movies, David A. Brunn 02-27-2009
